Two rampaging NHL squads are expected to light it up this Tuesday night, with the Columbus Blue Jackets looking to keep their unbeaten streak alive and the Calgary Flames aiming to extend theirs.  The Blue Jackets are trying to make a push for at least a Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, so a win tonight won’t just be a vindication of their current form, but also a big help to their playoff goals. Will Columbus take out the Flames? Or will Calgary stop the Blue Jackets on their tracks? With that said, it’s a good time to check out our NHL odds series, which includes our Columbus Blue Jackets-Calgary Flames prediction, odds, and pick we have laid out below.

Why the Columbus Blue Jackets Could Cover the Spread

Columbus is so hot, you are going to need extra thick oven gloves to handle this Blue Jackets team that had just won its third game in a row by downing the Montreal Canadiens on the road last Saturday, 2-1. The Blue Jackets have won all three games away from home and they will look to sustain that form later tonight against the also red-hot Flames. Since the start of February, the Blue Jackets have averaged a mind-numbing average of 4.3 goals across six games, during which they’ve gone 5-1-0. Forward Patrik Laine’s fingerprints are all over the success Columbus has been having of late, as he enters Tuesday’s game on a six-game point streak. Over the last 10 games, Laine recorded a total of eight goals, six assists, and four power play points.

The deeper lines have also stepped up, with the likes of Gustave Nyquist, Sean Kuraly, and Jack Roslovic each pumping at least two goals in that same span. It’s been coming together for the Blue Jackets of late, and they should look like a very different team – and stronger one – than the version of themselves that lost to Calgary late last January to the tune of a 6-0 loss at home. Columbus has become comfortable away from home ice, having won all of its previous five road games. Latvian goalie Elvis Merzlikins is expected to position between the pipes against Calgary, carrying with him a 7-7 record, a 3.73 GAA, and an 89.24 SV% in 14 road starts. The Blue Jackets have also covered the puck line in 13 of 23 games in enemy territory, so far this season.

Why the Calgary Flames Could Cover the Spread

Sure, Columbus is on a roll, but if there’s a team riding a bigger wave of momentum than the Blue Jackets, it’s definitely Calgary. The Flames are on a six-game undefeated streak, a stretch that includes wins against the likes of the Dallas Stars, Vegas Golden Knights, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The last time they were on the ice, the Flames took out the New York Islanders at home Saturday, 5-2. The offense is absolutely humming for Calgary, with the team scoring a total of 24 goals in a span of five games since the start of February while allowing just nine goals on the other side of the rink.

And unlike the Blue Jackets, the Flames’ recent offensive outburst is a product of what Calgary has been consistently doing at an elite level all season long. The Flames are second in the NHL in 5-on-5 CF% and sixth with a 108.7 xGF. The Blue Jackets’ power play attack that has come to life in February with four goals on eight chances is likely to get extinguished by Calgary’s highly rated penalty kill. The Flames (23-22 against the puck line this season) are third in the league with an 84.5 PK%. Calgary’s last five opponents have managed to find the back of the net just once in 12 total tries on the power play. Taking care of the goal-tending duties in this game for the Flames will be Jacob Markstrom, who is 3-0-0 with a 1.33 GAA in his past three starts.

Final Columbus Blue Jackets-Calgary Flames Prediction & Pick

In a matchup between streaking teams, it makes sense to go with the home squad Calgary that’s been more consistent for the most part of the season and with a much better goalie. The Blue Jackets are winning, but two of their last three wins were at the expense of everybody’s punching bag. Montreal. Look for the Blue Jackets to get outshot and dominated on both ends of the ice in this rematch.

Final Columbus Blue Jackets-Calgary Flames Pick: Flames -1.5 (-128)
