Two teams moving in different directions will collide this Tuesday night, as the Edmonton Oilers take on the San Jose Sharks. The Oilers have looked unbeatable for some time now, but they can’t be overconfident against a still-dangerous Sharks team that is playing at home. That’s also despite the Oilers have been undefeated in games against San Jose this season. With that said, it’s a good time to check out our NHL odds series, which includes our Oilers-Sharks prediction, odds, and pick we have laid out below.

Why the Oilers Could Cover the Spread

The Oilers are hotter than a pan’s surface on the offensive end of the rink since last week. Over their past four games, Connor McDavid and the rest of the Oilers have pumped out a total of 22 goals, while holding their opponents during that stretch to just 10 goals. The last time Edmonton was on the ice, it demolished the hapless Anaheim Ducks in a 6-1 win on the road last Tuesday. Having won 17 of 28 games since the All-Star break has allowed the Oilers to climb up the standings and put themselves in a position to catch up with the Los Angeles Kings and the Calgary Flames in the Pacific Division standings.

McDavid already has 105 points this season and he’s not even the only Oiler that has crossed the 100-point mark with several games left to play in the regular season. Leon Draisaitl already has 101 points while leading his team with 50 goals. McDavid scored five of his 40 goals this season over the last five Oilers games. Draisaitl, on the other hand, has found the back of the net six times over the same span.

Those two offensive powerhouses are definitely big threats to any team – especially to the Sharks, whose defense has been dropping the ball a lot lately. The Sharks have given up 14 goals in their last three games and 20 in the last five. Edmonton, which is 5-1 in its last six games as the road favorite, has also won the two meetings with the Sharks so far this season, with an aggregate score advantage of 8-2 in those games.

Why the Sharks Could Cover the Spread

The Sharks are going to need a bigger…presence on defense. As mentioned earlier, they have been functioning like a broken turnstile on that end. They are coming off a 5-4 home loss to the Dallas Stars last Saturday after losing to the Colorado Avalanche on the road two days earlier, 4-2. But two days of full rest could just be what the doctor ordered for San Jose, though bettors should be wary of the fact that the Sharks are 0-5 in their last five games after two days of relaxation.

San Jose is also hoping that its special teams will hold off the Oilers’ power play which is second in the NHL with a 26.21 percent success rate. While that seems to be a pretty tough ask for the Sharks, the fact is that the Oilers have been cold on the man advantage of late. The Oilers are only 1/15 on the power play in their last six games. Even more encouraging for San Jose is the Sharks blanking the Oilers in six total power-play opportunities in the two earlier meetings between these teams. The Sharks will look to counter Edmonton’s firepower with their duo of Timo Meier and Tomas Hertl. The two have combined for seven goals and nine assists over the last five Sharks games.

Over at the blue line, San Jose got deeper again with the return of defenseman Mario Ferraro while center Jonathan Dalen has also made his way back to the ice following a long absence due to a facial injury. The Sharks have won four of their past five games against an opponent that had just scored at least five goals in their recent outing.

Final Oilers-Sharks Prediction & Pick

The Oilers have all the motivation in the world to go hard in this game, as they look to strengthen their grip on a top-three spot in their division. The Sharks can be dangerous and got some nice production the last time out from players not named Timo Meier or Tomas Hertl, but their goaltending is just too unreliable to expect them to keep the red-hot Oilers at bay. Taking the Oilers to dominate and cover the puck line.

Final Oilers-Sharks Pick: Oilers -1.5 (+126)
