The New York Rangers have been showing the rest of the league that they are not a team you should mess with, especially at home tonight in this original six rivalry matchup against the Detroit Red Wings. The Rangers have won three games in a row now, including the two-week gap they had for the All-Star break. They look to extend their streak to four tonight, against a Red Wings team who are coming off of a 7-4 loss against the Wild on Monday. Detroit is desperately trying to find a playoff spot as they're just eight points outside the wildcard seed. New York on the other hand is just trying to move up the ranks, currently sitting in 3rd, and just two points behind the Carolina Hurricanes. It’s time to continue our NHL odds series with a Red Wings-Rangers prediction and pick.

Why The Red Wings Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Red Wings still have life in them as they currently sit in 5th place in the Atlantic Division, just eight points behind the Boston Bruins for their first playoff appearance since 2018. With that said, they'll really need to step up their game tonight against the Rangers if they want to keep climbing that playoff ladder. Detroit has been in the middle of the pack all season long, ranked 20th in offensive production, scoring 2.84 goals per game. Typically you expect that production to come from team captain, Dylan Larkin, but a lot of it has come from their rookies in Lucas Raymond (13 goals, 39 points) and Moritz Seider (5 goals, 34 points), who are both running candidates for the Calder Trophy, best NHL rookie. However, their defense and goaltending haven't been anything to write home about.

Alex Nedeljkovic has been the starter for most of the season, holding a 14-14-5 record so far, allowing 3.01 goals per game with a .907 save percentage. It's assumed that he'll get the starting nod tonight, but he'll have to really put in work if he wants to keep the Red Wings in this game.

Why The Rangers Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Rangers have so many weapons on their team, but it mainly comes from in net this year, as goaltender Igor Shesterkin has been playing out of his mind and deservedly making a very strong case for the Vezina Trophy winner this year. He's holding a record of 23-5-2 with a save percentage of .938 and allowing just 2.05 goals against per game, as he looks to get another start between the pipes tonight. New York thrives on the power play, scoring at a 25.7% success rate, 4th best in the league. With weapons in Artemi Parnarin, Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider, and Adam Fox, the Rangers will look to keep their streak alive and have a big chance to defend home ice tonight for an extra two points towards their playoff seeding.

Final Red Wings-Rangers Prediction & Pick

Let's be honest, the Rangers are simply a much better team when it comes to firepower. They have a clear advantage in goaltending, offense, and defense. However, Detroit is pesky, they sneak up on you when you least expect them to do something. I think they're going to keep it close, but not close enough to chance the spread tonight. I don't necessarily like the odds of this pick, but it's better safe than sorry, I'm taking the New York Rangers Moneyline here tonight. Look for the Rangers to defend home ice at all costs and walk away with a nice victory to extend their win streak.
