The Buffalo Sabres will go just beyond the border into Toronto where they take on the Maple Leafs in this old-school rivalry matchup tonight. The Sabres had extremely low expectations heading into the season and although they started off playing really well, they've since slipped back into the Sabres we all know. Buffalo is currently on a six-game winning streak and going 2-7-1 in their last 10. The Maple Leafs are on a three-game winning streak and are 5-4-1 in their past 10. It’s time to continue our NHL odds series with a Sabres-Maple Leafs prediction and pick.

Why The Sabres Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Buffalo Sabres were never really expected to do a whole lot this season, and now they're struggling. They're 25th in goals per game (2.62), but with a surprisingly decent power play, scoring at a 19.2% rate. Needless to say, the Sabres are also a mess on defence, ranking 29th in goals allowed per game (3.58) while their penalty kill is below average, succeeding at a 76.6% rate. With that said, Buffalo has some decent players on their team such as Tage Thompson, Alex Tuch, and Rasmus Dahlin, but it's never quite enough to get out of that rebuilding stage. Their starting 40-year-old goaltender in Craig Anderson isn't playing very well either, as he's posting a save percentage of .905 with 3.01 goals against per game. He'll look to get the start tonight against a heavily favoured Maple Leafs team.

Why The Maple Leafs Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Maple Leafs are back to being good as they're on a three-game winning streak once again. With a team that's loaded with talent, you can expect them to be at the top of the league in almost everything. They rank fifth in goals per game (3.53) and also have the league's number one power play. scoring at a ridiculous 30 percent. The Maple Leafs have always been known to have an “offense first” type of approach to their rosters, which is why their defense is kind of lackluster, but still ranking 10th in goals allowed per game at 2.76. Their penalty kill is also pretty good, ranking fourth overall while having an 85 percent success rate.

Goaltending has been a pretty big issue for the Leafs as backup netminder Petr Mrazek will look to get yet another start tonight as he's putting up a save percentage of .895 and allowing 3.07 goals against per game. Regardless, they should easily be able to take care of business tonight at home against a not-so-good Buffalo team.

Final Sabres-Maple Leafs Prediction & Pick

Buffalo has a tendency to not make wins for the other teams easy. They're very physical and love to apply the pressure. However, Toronto is just simply a better team. They have more talent, more chemistry, more momentum, they should look to win pretty easily here. With that said, the goaltending on both sides of this matchup is horrendous, and it'll be constant scoring all game long. Because I don't love the odds for the Maple Leafs Moneyline and their spread being so high at -2.5, I'm taking the over at 6.5 – Toronto could very well end up covering the over on their own anyway.

Final Sabres-Maple Leafs Prediction and Pick: Over 6.5 (-110)
