Nikola Mirotic won’t be playing for Spain in this year’s edition of Eurobasket that is to be played between August 31 and September 17.

The sweet-shooting big man announced his intent on his Twitter account, and will instead focus on working out this summer as he remains unsigned. The Bulls still hold the best chance at landing Mirotic since he’s a restricted free agent, giving them the power to match any offer made by other teams to automatically retain his services.

This decision certainly plays well into Chicago’s favor as Mirotic will be saved from injury risks outside the NBA.

Mirotic hails from Montenegro, but is a naturalized Spanish citizen, as with Serge Ibaka of the Toronto Raptors.

Last season, the 6-foot-10 power forward averaged 10.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for the Bulls, but saw inconsistent floor time from coach Fred Hoiberg.
