Earlier this week, the Detroit Lions made news by signing quarterback Matthew Stafford to a historic contract. Stafford is now the highest-paid player in the NFL with others like Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers waiting to get their new deals.

Rodgers, who goes head-to-head against Stafford twice a year in the NFC North, is one of the quarterbacks next line for a lucrative long-term deal. The one-time Super Bowl champion recently talked about Stafford's deal and what it has meant for his pending contract negotiations, via ESPN's Rob Demovsky.

“When it comes to how that affects my own status, nothing's changed,” Rodgers said. “I have this year and two more years to play, and that stuff takes care of itself.”

With Stafford getting $27 million per season, Rodgers will almost certainly surpass that number to take over the distinction as the league's highest-paid player. Stafford's new deal exceeded the contract Derek Carr recently signed with the Oakland Raiders where the Fresno State product is making nearly $25 million per season.

Although the Packers could very well make Rodgers the highest-paid player in the league, he isn't the only one that may sign a new deal in the near future. Kirk Cousins of the Washington Redskins, reigning NFL MVP Matt Ryan, and New Orleans Saints veteran Drew Brees could also ink contract extensions.

It'll be interesting to see which quarterback will be the next to be dubbed the league's highest-paid and whether Rodgers is eager to get it done or content to let these other star quarterbacks set the bar a little higher first.
