In October last year, former Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings legend Brett Favre generated headlines … for the wrong reasons. The quarterback was involved in a scandal that featured him accepting a sum of $1.1 million for a speaking appearance he no-showed back in 2017 and 2018. Now, new texts show that the scandal runs much, much deeper.
In an investigative article by Anna Wolfe of Mississippi Today, texts from Brett Favre show the quarterback asking numerous times for funds from Mississippi officials. The grand total of the former Packers QB's spending turns out to be just over $8 million, according to Wolfe:
“With the drug company investment, the volleyball arena and other payouts, at least $8 million in misspending auditors identified within Mississippi’s larger welfare scandal stemmed from Favre’s requests or fees. [Nancy] New’s nonprofit, called Mississippi Community Education Center and primarily funded by MDHS, directly paid Favre more than $1 million to be a spokesman for the Families First for Mississippi program.”
Text messages from the article incriminate Favre more, as text trails show him in the act of asking for favors from Mississippi officials. Even more damning is the fact that the Packers QB clearly made this moves in order to profit, being quoted as saying:
“Call me crazy but my goal is to take home 20 million when it’s all said and done,”
Favre's camp is yet to respond to these new claims. The ex-Packers QB has previously denied his involvement in this fraudulent activity in a long Twitter rant, saying he'd never do that to the state and its people.
