It shouldn't really come as a surprise. At this point in the offseason, it isn't even a fair fight.

On one side of the line of scrimmage is an offense, learning a new playbook under a new coach. On the other, a defense that has a few new additions, but also is already familiar with its scheme.

In a practice without pads, one would think the offense would cruise. But, In Green Bay, that is not the case.

This is my first year,” 10th-season right tackle Bryan Bulaga said, “where I feel like the defense is ahead of the offense.”

Perhaps it’s a sign the defense is ready to break out under Mike Pettine. After all, that’s where the focus was primarily during free agency and the draft, with the Packers spending big on the likes of Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith and Adrian Amos while drafting Rashan Gary and Darnell Savage Jr.

Bulaga said there has been “a lot of talk” coming from the other side of the ball during offseason workouts. Though, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

“You don’t mind our defense doing well,” Bulaga said, “because I like that we’re doing well. And when they’re doing well, you’re going against very good players doing well. When you’re successful against that, it only builds confidence.”

Any other offseason, this would be a cause of concern for the offense. The unit has reportedly looked sluggish at times, an unwanted fact, but also one that was inevitable. Pro Bowl receiver Davante Adams said it feels like being a rookie again.

The offense will find a groove eventually. But, for now, the other side of the ball is carrying the torch.
