The Green Bay Packers currently find themselves set at quarterback for the foreseeable future, but DeShone Kizer – their second string option – is coming into the offseason with large expectations. Although Rodgers is the de facto head of the quarterback group, Kizer’s dreams stretch way beyond just being a backup.

Speaking to Packers News’ Jim Owzcarski (via 247 Sports), Kizer has his eyes set on some big targets throughout his career.

“I don’t see myself as Aaron Rodgers’ backup for the final era of his career,” Kizer said. “I see myself as a future Super Bowl MVP. That’s the goal that I want to head toward. That’s the level I want to play at. Therefore, if I’m competing and focused in on the backup competition, then once again, I’m limiting myself.”

Kizer came into the NFL with tons of buzz, but had a rough rookie year with the Cleveland Browns. After being traded to Green Bay, Kizer got the chance to play sporadically, but didn’t flash much.

That won’t stop Kizer from being positive, though, and according to him, he thinks he’s on track to have a solid 2019 season.

“I’m not going to allow the Detroit Lions situation or the Chicago Bears situation or the 0-15 in my starts in Cleveland situation to deter my confidence because of the specific situations that those came in,” Kizer said. “Each of those situations are so unique to themselves that my confidence hasn’t wavered.”

“I truly believe that I’m on an upward trajectory. I’m playing the best football I’ve ever played. I’m not turning the ball over as much anymore. I’m seeing the game. I’m learning so much from Aaron. I’m learning so much from the systems that I’ve been in that I truly believe that at any point in time as we speak, if I can continue to stay on the path that I’m on right now, that I can get back to the path that I thought that I was on as a rookie starting in this league.”

While Kizer may not have a starting job this season, he can still grow a ton in the new Packers system.

As he continues to develop his skills, Kizer has the opportunity to finally get some reps in a brand new offense that seems more tailored to the modern era, and also will look to showcase his skills to not only the Packers, but any other team that may be watching.
