There is plenty of hype surrounding Sunday night's showdown between Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. For head coach Mike McCarthy, their matchup is reminiscent of when Hall of Famers Joe Montana and John Elway squared off back in the day.

McCarthy has seen his fair share of intriguing battles during his time as a coach. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, he feels Brady and Rodgers have become the new Montana-Elway:

“I think this is clearly going to be right there or maybe the best. Montana-John Elway is something that I was fortunate to be around ’93-’94.”

There is certainly plenty of truth to McCarthy's comments. The similarities between these two showdowns are clear as day. It is safe to assume McCarthy is expecting much of the same in Week 9.

Much like Montana, Brady was one of the most accomplished players in NFL history when they squared off. He had already been dubbed as the greatest quarterback of all time after the dynasty in San Francisco that brought home four Super Bowl victories.

Meanwhile, Elway and Rodgers were largely considered to be much more talented than their veteran counterparts. They had no problem achieving individual success thanks to their generational talent, however, they were never able to reach the pinnacle as much as Montana and Brady were. As a result, the latter two names are often the first ones that pop up when debates rage about the greatest of all time.

Discussions will always continue to be had on the topic. Regardless, it is safe to assume that fans are in for a treat this Sunday when Brady and Rodgers square off.
