During this past weekend, Green Bay Packers star linebacker Clay Matthews had a bit of a scare after he suffered a broken nose during a celebrity softball game in Kansas City after taking a softball hit at him.

Since the incident, Matthews has voiced much optimism about the situation that has quieted down any uneasiness with his health moving forward as he will undergo surgery at some point this week once the swelling goes down. According to Wes Hodkiewicz of Packers Unscripted, head coach Mike McCarthy echoed that stance by stating that the team has no “long-term concerns” with Matthews moving forward.

It was a freak accident that happened in a charity softball after he got nailed in the face with a liner following throwing the pitch. Matthews had initially reacted by grabbing his nose and covering his face with his glove as he moved to the dugout to receive medical help. This was an injury that had no precursors given that it was just a ball that was hit directly at him without the ability to react in time to put his glove up to deflect the ball from hitting him in the face on the nose.

Matthews will likely take a few days off to recover from the injury after surgery before returning to the team on the practice field. This shouldn't have any long-term impact on his career given that he didn't suffer any other additional head injuries. It could have been a much worse outcome had that ball hit him elsewhere on the head.

Instead, this will require him to use some time away from the Packers to fully recover from the surgery. Matthews is expected to once again take on a significant role defensively as one of the primary pass rushers for Green Bay in the 2018 season.
