The San Diego Padres were hit with a major blow when Fernando Tatis Jr. reported to Spring Training with a broken wrist that will keep him out for up to three months. The Padres are now trying to make a big splash in free agency to help soften the blow of the injury. It was reported earlier in the week that San Diego was upping its pursuit of Freddie Freeman, and now Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports a chase of Kris Bryant.

It seems clear the Padres are exploring every big-name option out their to bolster their lineup in the wake of the Tatis news. While most indications point to Freeman signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers, it certainly doesn't hurt to make a run for him. The same can be said for Bryant, who has the Colorado Rockies and other suitors hot on his trail.

San Diego was one of the more disappointing teams in MLB last season despite Tatis' MVP-caliber season and a talented roster. The Padres went just 79-83 to finish third in the NL West behind the San Francisco Giants and Dodgers, both of whom were 100-plus-win juggernauts. Manager Jayce Tingler got the boot, with Bob Melvin replacing him.

The Tatis injury is a major setback for the franchise as they try to compete with those other clubs, so San Diego would love to be able to get another star to help replace that bat in the lineup for the time being. And then, when Tatis comes back, the Padres would be a truly fearsome group at the dish.
