Why The Padres Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Padres spent many years fielding a pathetic offense. Finally, they have developed a lineup that is a threat to any pitcher that opposes them.

San Diego ranks first in batting average. Additionally, they are also fifth in on-base percentage. The Padres are also ninth in runs and home runs as well as 11th in slugging percentage. Ultimately, they have some top-tier players who can make some good contact.

Luis Arraez has been great since the Padres acquired him from the Miami Marlins. Amazingly, he is batting .346 with one home run, 13 RBIs, and 19 runs over 37 games with the Padres. Arraez has also done well in his career against the Phillies, batting .347 with 17 hits, one home run, three RBIs, and six runs over 12 games against them.

Fernando Tatis Jr. is doing the right things at the plate. Currently, he is hitting .277 with 13 home runs, 35 RBIs, and 48 runs. Tatis has struggled against the Phillies. Unfortunately, he is batting just .211 with 12 hits, three home runs, 10 RBIs, and 10 runs over 16 games against them.

Manny Machado is not as productive as he used to be. Ultimately, he is batting just .244 with six home runs, 32 RBIs, and 27 runs. Machado has also struggled against Philadelphia in his career, batting .250 with 35 hits, 10 home runs, 22 RBIs, and 20 runs over 36 games against them.

The Padres have not been consistent on the mound this season. Currently, they are 15th in team ERA. The relievers have not been consistent, either. Ultimately, their relievers rank 16th in team ERA.

The Padres will cover the spread if they can clobber some runs across the plate early. Then, they need Vasquez to avoid making mistakes.

Why The Phillies Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Phillies are the best team in baseball. Remarkably, they have put it all together on the field. One aspect of why they are doing so well is because of their elite hitting.

The Phillies are sixth in batting average, home run, and slugging percentage. Furthermore, they are fourth in on-base percentage and runs. This team is pretty good at hitting the baseball.

Trea Turner may return for this game after sitting out the last few weeks with a hamstring injury. While the Phillies have not cratered without him, they would certainly welcome his return. Turner was hitting .343 with two home runs, nine RBIs, and 27 runs before his injury. Also, he is batting .305 with 75 hits, nine home runs, 32 RBIs, and 49 runs across 59 games against the Padres.

Bryce Harper is always a force to watch. Significantly, he is batting .276 with 15 home runs, 46 RBIs, and 40 runs. Harper has also done well against the Padres, hitting .286 with 56 hits, 14 home runs, 46 RBIs, and 38 runs over 55 games. Now, he will try and mash some hits together in this one.

The Phillies also have elite pitchers. Amazingly, they are third in team ERA. Their bullpen has also delivered top-notch performances. Currently, they are 10th in team ERA.

The Phillies will cover the spread if their dangerous lineup can get a boost from Turner and Harper. Then, they need Sanchez to toss a good game.

Final Padres-Phillies Prediction & Pick

The Phillies swept the Padres at Petco Park in the first matchup. Yes, San Diego has played well enough to stay competitive. And they have gone 12-10 against teams with winning records. But the Phillies have seemingly dominated this matchup going back to their showdown in the National League Championship Series two seasons ago. Sanchez is good at home. Therefore, we expect him to stay consistent and lead the Phillies to a win.
