The Cincinnati Reds host the San Diego Padres for Game 2 of a three-game series on Wednesday night. It's time to continue our MLB odds series with a Padres-Reds prediction and pick.

The Padres and Reds play Game 1 of the series Tuesday night. Joe Musgrove makes his return from the IL and will take on Andrew Abbott.

The Padres enter the series with a (25-25) record after beating the Atlanta Braves 3/4 in the four-game series. SD won the first three games of the series including a 9-1 win on Sunday Night Baseball and the next morning they came back down 5-0 to win 6-5. Believe it or not, San Diego has won five of their last six series including wins over the Dodgers, Braves, Reds, Diamondbacks, and Cubs.

The Reds will look to bounce back after a rough stretch, that pretty much started when they lost the series against the Padres late in April and early May. Cincinnati would then lose eight straight games and their record is now (19-28). The team is dealing with injuries but still have the talent to turn things around.

Why The Padres Will Cover The Spread/Win

Starting for the Friars will be Michael King. He has had an up-and-down season to begin his Padres tenure but for the most part, things have been positive. He had a no-hitter through seven innings a few weeks back against the Milwaukee Brewers and then recently had the game of his career against the Dodgers with an 11-K, 2-hit performance in San Diego. Oddly enough, two starts against the Colorado Rockies have derailed his momentum and his ERA sits at 4.31 at the moment. He is (3-4) on the year with 61 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.36 in 54.1 innings. King owns a 3.31 ERA on the road.

It seems the Friars' offense has woken up. They are now tied for 4th in batting average alongside the New York Yankees at (.257), 3rd in hits at (436), 6th in RBIs with (219), and 11th in home runs with (51). The lineup is deep and should be making an impact every night.

Luis Arraez leads the team with a .350 batting average (as a Padre) and is batting .315 overall. Jurickson Profar is second on the team with a .339 batting average and adds seven homers and 31 RBIs. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado are struggling to remain consistent at the plate but find ways to contribute each game.

Xander Bogaerts injured his shoulder against the Braves and may miss a few days. His status is day-to-day.

Why The Reds Will Cover The Spread/Win

The former Padre, Nick Martinez, will start for the Reds. Martinez is (1-2) on the year with a 4.23 ERA in 38.1 innings pitched. He has one start against SD this season but he hasn't been a consistent starter for the Reds. He has a few appearances as a long-reliever but four starts on the year. In his last start, Martinez pitched a gem against the Dodgers. He pitched five innings and allowed only one hit while striking out four in Los Angeles. The Reds went on to win 7-2 in their series opener. Martinez owns a 5.48 ERA at home.

Elly De La Cruz can do it all but can't do it all for the Reds if they want to win. He needs someone else to step up. Nobody on the Reds is hitting better than .272 and that is Jake Fraley. De La Cruz has inserted himself into an early MVP conversation but that will quickly shut down if the Reds don't get back on the winning train. He has nine bombs with 22 RBIs but is batting only .256 on the year. At home, De La Cruz is batting .315 with five homers and 14 of his 22 RBIs.

Spencer Steer is dealing with a sore ankle and could miss a few games. He is second on the team in hits and leads the team with 31 RBIs.

Final Padres-Reds Prediction & Pick

We will see how Game 1 goes tonight, but as of now, it seems the Reds are too depleted to keep up with a hot Padres team. Take San Diego to win as they have the better pitcher on the mound, and hit the ball well against their former teammate, Martinez, in their last matchup.
