Gerald McCoy had quite a few teams interested in signing him following his release from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While there were a lot of teams interested, the final three teams in the running to sign him were the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore Ravens. McCoy has finally made his decision.

After visiting with all three of those teams, McCoy decided to stay in the NFC South division and sign with the Panthers. One intriguing report from ESPN's Adam Schefter states that Cam Newton played a big role in luring McCoy to the franchise.

Newton has always had a good presence when it comes to recruiting talent. He may not be one of the top five quarterbacks in the NFL anymore, but his attitude and charisma certainly plays a role.

McCoy is going to be a massive addition for the Panthers' defense. He may not be the superstar that he once was, although that may change with a fresh start in Carolina.

Last season with the Buccaneers, McCoy ended up recording 28 total tackles to go along with six sacks and a defended pass. Those numbers may not pop off the charts, but they are still intriguing. McCoy has always been able to get to the quarterback and that didn't change last season.

Carolina will give McCoy the chance to face Tampa Bay twice this season. That in and of itself had to be a major draw, as the Buccaneers did him a bit dirty. McCoy is going to be a great addition for a Panthers team that is hungry to get back into contention in the NFC.
