The Carolina Panthers have made some notable changes to the coaching staff this NFL offseason to change up things with their offensive game plan with star quarterback Cam Newton. This has brought aboard an established voice with a new offensive coordinator in Norv Turner.

This has changed the offensive scheme a bit to help lead to being a more effective quarterback throwing the ball. A part of that is getting Newton more comfortable with the option of making check-down passes as quarterbacks coach Scott Turner has recently voiced during an interview with Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

“With him, on every play, we want to make sure he has a plan and he’s following that plan,” said Scott Turner. “And to know checking down is OK. A lot of Cam’s issues have come because he’s so talented that he thinks he can make every play work. And sometimes, it’s just not there, so you check down and go to the next play. By holding the ball, sometimes he takes hits or falls into negative plays.”

Newton is undoubtedly one of the most physically talented quarterbacks in the league that has a tremendously strong arm. This has led to him more often than not deciding to take the more difficult decision due to his arm strength instead of deciding to check down to passing options out of the backfield or a few yards past the line of scrimmages.

What should help Newton make more of an effort to implementing that into the offense is that he has talent in the backfield behind in rising star running back Christian McCaffrey along with offseason addition C.J. Anderson. This minor change in philosophy could lead to their being more efficiency and balance in the offense.

This is something that only time will tell if this increased emphasis on taking this approach will be a more significant part of the offensive game plan.
