The Carolina Panthers intend to request an interview with New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The 43-year-old McDaniels is a longtime coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Patriots and was also the head coach of the Denver Broncos for two seasons in 2009. McDaniels is supposed to be a highly contested head-coach candidate with multiple teams already rumored to be interested in interviewing and potentially hiring the New England offensive coordinator.

Already, the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns have also requested to interview McDaniels to replace fired head coaches Pat Shurmur and Freddie Kitchens, respectively.

As head coach of the Broncos, McDaniels' teams went 11-17 in two seasons he was there. Prior to the two-year stint with the AFC West franchise, McDaniels spent four seasons on Bill Belichick's Patriots staff as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the Super Bowl-winning New England team. After his time in Denver, McDaniels was hired by the then-St. Louis Rams, in 2011 as an offensive coordinator. McDaniels was ousted when head coach at the time Steve Spagnuolo was let go and later returned to New England to resume his coordinator role under Belichick again, where he has been since.

The Panthers let go of longtime head coach Ron Rivera towards the end of the 2019 season after another unsuccessful bid leading the team. Rivera finishes his time in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a 76-63-1 overall record with the Panthers, including a Super Bowl 50 appearance in 2015.

Team owner David Tepper has much to reconfigure in the NFL offseason, including possibly a changeup in the works in the front office and parting with personnel, like the face of the franchise and former MVP Cam Newton at the quarterback, who missed most of the season with a foot injury.
