Baker Mayfield has been one of the most discussed names during the NFL offseason. The Cleveland Browns quarterback enjoyed a sold 2020 season but dealt with a mixture of underperformance and injuries during 2021. Cleveland then made the controversial decision to acquire Deshaun Watson and Mayfield ultimately requested a trade. The Carolina Panthers have been linked to Mayfield for seemingly the entire offseason. And recent reports indicate they may be the favorite to land the QB.

NFL insider Jonathan Jones shared the following report in reference to the Panthers’ interest in Baker Mayfield.

As minicamps begin today for the Browns and Panthers, trade talks between the teams continue surrounding QB Baker Mayfield, per sources. The main issue remains Mayfield’s salary and how much (or how little) teams pay.

Jones added this as well.

There’s urgency on Carolina’s side to execute the deal soon so Mayfield can get some time in minicamp with the Panthers. For the Browns, it’s the best offer they have. Talks ongoing.

The Browns originally wanted a first round pick in return for Mayfield. However, teams were hesitant to meet Cleveland’s request due to Mayfield’s down 2021 campaign and high salary. Although salary still is a looming issue, the Panthers reportedly have the best offer on the table according to Jones.

Carolina has multiple QB options if the Mayfield trade fails to come to fruition. Sam Darnold is the projected Panthers starter and young Matt Corral is waiting in the wings.

It is also conceivable that one of Darnold or Corral is involved in a potential Mayfield trade. Cleveland may have interest in adding QB depth given the uncertainty surrounding Deshaun Watson.

This will be a situation worth monitoring closely over the next few days. If the Panthers are going to acquire Baker Mayfield, it is going to happen sooner rather than later.
