Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is undoubtedly one of the biggest stars of the NFL over the past couple of years. The sky's the limit for the young man after winning the MVP in 2018 followed by a Super Bowl win and MVP in 2019.

Let's get to know the dynamite decision-maker for the Chiefs through his parents – Randi and Patrick Mahomes, Sr.

His father – Patrick Mahomes Sr.

Patrick Mahomes definitely got a lot of his athletic genes from his father.

Pat Mahomes Sr. was a Major League Baseball pitcher. Born on August 9, 1970, the elder Pat Mahomes was a three sport athlete in high school. He played football and basketball as well as baseball at Lindale High School in Texas. The elder Mahomes actually did not begin pitching until his senior year of high school following an injury to a teammate. He initially signed to play baseball at the University of Arkansas, declining both football and basketball scholarship offers from Division I programs. Patrick Sr. was then drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the sixth round of the 1988 MLB Draft and chose to go pro right out of high school.

He would make his Major League debut in 1992 with the Twins, playing for them for five years before being traded to the Boston Red Sox. He would spend two seasons with the Red Sox before being released. Mahomes would then go to Japan, playing for the Yokohama BayStars of Nippon Professional Baseball for two years.

He would return to the Majors two years later, playing for the New York Mets from 1999 to 2000. He would then have year long stints with the Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, and conclude his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2003, Mahomes would be sent down to the Triple-A Nashville Sounds and bounce around the minors and independent baseball for the next seven years before retiring following the 2009 season.

One interesting note is that Pat Sr. initially tried to steer his son from football to baseball. He had concerns about the brutality of the game which could take a toll on his son. In the end though, Patrick Mahomes the quarterback seems to have made the right decision. In such a short span of time, he's already made his mark in the NFL's history books.

His mother – Randi Mahomes

His mother Randi Mahomes was born in 1976. She married Pat in the late 90's and gave birth to Patrick on September 17, 1995. Not much is known about Randi outside of her relationship with her son. The two remain extremely close, even as the quarterback entered superstardom. She often says in the media that her son Patrick is a blessing. She also says that Patrick is a responsible son and a loving brother to both his siblings. Randi is very protective of her children. She hates it when people make fun of Patrick’s voice which is a little different than normal people.

Randi, like Pat Sr., may have influenced Patrick Mahomes' athletic career as well. She was very high on the academic side of things for her son Patrick. Randi always made sure to remind him that “student” came first before “athlete”. When it came time for Mahomes to make a decision on whether to declare for the MLB draft or to take a college football scholarship, Randi was there. Although she didn't dictate his decision, she reminded him of the great opportunity a college education presented for him. Ultimately, it turned out to be the best decision for him to make – reaching unimagined heights for his football career.
