The recent arrival of the 2015 NFL MVP in Cam Newton shook up the quarterback room of the New England Patriots.

Many assumed that the former Carolina Panther will automatically be named as Week 1 starter given his credentials. However, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick says otherwise. It looks like a tight competition will be developing for the starting quarterback spot of the New England Patriots as the training camp progresses.

Belichick shared his insights with Keyshawn Johnson on the Keyshawn, JWill and Zubin Show as tweeted by ESPN NFL Nation reporter Mike Reiss:

Last July 8, 2020, Newton signed a one-year deal with the Patriots for a base salary of $1.05 million. The agreement ultimately ended a four-month-long free agency drought for the former Auburn Tiger who was previously released by the Panthers.

His arrival in Foxborough was met with high expectations after the departure of long-time quarterback Tom Brady. He will be joining a quarterback room composed of sophomore Jarrett Stidham, veteran Brian Hoyer, and undrafted rookie free agent Brian Lewerke.

Huge responsibilities will be set on the chosen QB1 as he will try to steer the Patriots throughout the 2020 season despite having a depleted roster. This comes on top of new circumstances brought about by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Despite the odds, playoff aspirations are very much alive and expected from the team.

The Patriots will aim to defend its 11-straight AFC East division titles and continue its 11-straight playoff runs. The starting quarterback and the rest of the team will be first tested by the Miami Dolphins on September 13 at Gilette Stadium.
