While a lot of starting quarterbacks in the NFL sit out much of the preseason, don't expect that to be the case with the New England Patriots in their opener against the Washington Football Team.

Mike Reiss of ESPN is reporting that both Cam Newton and Mac Jones are expected to take the field for the Patriots in some capacity in Thursday's affair against the WFT. The Jones part isn't surprising and was expected for the rookie but for Newton, many assumed he wouldn't be suiting up.

It is worth nothing that Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has previously stated that Newton is the starting quarterback for New England. However, it's well known that Belichick likes to keep his players on their toes and prepared for anything so if Jones goes wild in the preseason, who knows what could happen.

The Patriots opted to bring back Newton this offseason after an underwhelming season both for New England and Newton in 2020. They then went out and drafted Jones in the first round. Many had Jones pegged to go in the top 10 of the draft and then he somehow slipped to the Patriots at No. 15 and right into their lap.

For now, it looks as though it will be Cam Newton's job but if he fizzles in the preseason and Jones steps up, it wouldn't be surprising to see the pressure put on Belichick to flip the script that has previously been laid out.

On Thursday, the Patriots will get a look at both.
