The New England Patriots are receiving quite polarizing reactions after they gave quarterback Cam Newton another year to play with the team heading to next season. Despite some negativity on social media, Patriots safety Devin McCourty still expressed his excitement for the return of Newton, especially with a complete roster this time around.

Head coach Bill Belichick only had a depleted roster in the 2020 season after several of his key veterans opted out of playing due to concerns for the COVID-19 pandemic. The list was bannered by the likes of linebacker Dont'a Hightower, safety Patrick Chung, and offensive tackle Marcus Cannon, among others.

After seeing how the NFL was able to complete the 2020 season amid the pandemic, the Patriots players are already expected to head back to the field and bolster the team's lineup in 2021.

On that note, not only McCourty but also running back Damien Harris was hyped over the looming comeback of Newton who signed a fresh one-year, $5 million deal.

Newton finished the 2020 season with a total of 2,657 passing yards on 242 completions to go with eight touchdowns through 15 appearances. With the lack of weapons around him, his production wasn't enough to power the Patriots as they settled for a 7-9 record to nab the third spot in the AFC East. Newton and the rest of the team eventually received criticism as their performance significantly regressed after almost two decades of dominating the league.

The public may have a different opinion about Newton's return but the Patriots players themselves felt positive regarding the team's decision. Their excitement only implies that they still believe in the capabilities of Cam Newton who is expected to carry the team back to relevance moving forward.
