Veteran linebacker James Harrison has just completed his 14th season and still has the desire to return for another campaign.

According to Chris Price of the Boston Sports Journal, there is reportedly a “reasonable chance” that the 39-year-old could continue his NFL career for the New England Patriots in the 2018 season.

It’s early in the team-building process but according to a source close to James Harrison, there’s a ‘reasonable chance’ he could play for the Patriots in 2018.

Harrison played in four total games including three in the playoffs with the Patriots last season after being cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers in late December. He registered 10 total tackles with two sacks and a forced fumble over that brief stretch with the team.

Although Harrison isn't the player he once was, he has clearly demonstrated that he has plenty left in the tank to be an effective player on the field. Prior to Super Bowl LII, he did indicate that he wanted to play one to two more seasons, which could lead to the Patriots working out a one- or two-year deal with him over the offseason.

New England is currently projected to have $13.7 million in salary cap space at their disposal. The team will likely look to improve their pass rush through either free agency or trade. This aspect of the defense took a significant hit due to injuries with one of their key players in linebacker Dont'a Hightower suffering a torn pectoral muscle that ended his season prematurely after just five games played.

The Patriots could move quickly on this front to get Harrison under contract for next season in order to provide some more stability in their linebacking core. With the free agency period still a few weeks away, there should clearer picture of what the front office plans to do.
