New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman took to Twitter this past weekend to share a video that was circulating about hip-hop artist and Atlanta native Killer Mike urging an end to violence in his city.

Julian Edelman, a 34-year-old three-time Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl LIII MVP, told his followers to “stop what you're doing and listen to” Killer Mike, a rapper and activist who made a personal appearance in a show of leadership to quell violent outbursts by Atlanta residents.

It's not clear about the entire connection of violent demonstrations this past weekend in certain cities, like Atlanta, but following the murder of Minneapolis African-American man George Floyd while in police custody, peaceful protests and demonstrations across the nation were held by social justice activists. Julian Edelman is trying to spread awareness of this.

In some situations, including in confrontations with various law enforcement in the country, violence struck while a movement predicated on demilitarizing police departments — and on the need to call for deescalation of police force, along with accountability for officers killing a disproportionate number of people of color — spilled into vandalism and destruction of property. Julian Edelman is worried about this.

Despite calls for ending excessive police presence in black communities, clashes with law enforcement gave cover for certain individuals to break into businesses, loot, and riot. In the viral video shared by Julian Edelman, Killer Mike — the Run the Jewels co-founder and a surrogate for Bernie Sanders in the Senator's recent presidential campaign — explained his connection to the city, telling residents to stop hurting black-owned businesses via destruction along with explaining his own familial connection to activism.

Julian Edelman wants more to hear Killer Mike's nonviolent message.
