New Orleans Pelicans point guard Lonzo Ball has declared his top choices for the message he'd like to be displayed on the back of his jersey when the NBA resumes play in Orlando later this July.

According to The Athletic's Will Guillory, Ball has requested for the league to put “Equality” in place of his surname on his threads. The Pelicans guard added that his second choice would be “Black Lives Matter.”

On Friday, the NBA and the players association reached an agreement on a list of various social justice-related messages for players to put on the back of their jerseys, if they so choose. Per ESPN's Marc J. Spears, the options include (in addition to Lonzo Ball's choices): Vote, Say Their Names, Say Her Name, Justice, Peace, Freedom, Power to the People, I Can't Breathe, Sí Se Puede, among a host of others.

Players can submit first and second choices to the league for approval, though it's unclear why a player would not receive approval for their preferred option.

Various players, along with commissioner Adam Silver, have repeatedly stated that they hope the league's restart in Orlando can be used as an opportunity to continue using the NBA's platform to advocate for police reform and systemic racism, as so many members of the NBA have been involved in the movement since the death of George Floyd on May 25.

In his third NBA season and first in New Orleans, Ball is averaging a solid 12.4 points, 6.2 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game. His Pelicans (28-36) currently trail the upstart Memphis Grizzlies (32-33) by 3.5 games ahead of the eight “seeding” games that will kick off the league's resumption, set to begin on July 3o.
