The New Orleans Pelicans are gearing up for a play-in game against the LA Clippers that will decide the fate of their season. The fate of their future, though, lies with Zion Williamson. His foot injury has kept him sidelined.
According to Andrew Lopez of ESPN, the Pelicans and Williamson don't see eye-to-eye on the severity of his injury. New Orleans seems to be playing it safe, even with Williamson healthy enough to throw down a 360-degree dunk.
According to multiple sources, there's currently a difference of opinion between the Pelicans and Williamson on whether he is healthy enough to play. The team maintains that the bone in Williamson's foot hasn't healed enough for him to take the floor.
Lopez added that Williamson's condition concerns still linger. He added that the Pelicans star is now closer to his usual playing weight and addressed those concerns when he went to recover in Portland.
When he showed up to media day prior to the season, he looked well above his listed playing weight of 285 pounds.
Sources have told ESPN that Williamson is closer to his playing weight than he was at that date. Part of what he did in Portland was conditioning as much as he could while avoiding putting too much weight on his recovering foot.
New Orleans approached playoff contention without Williamson, who was an All-Star last season and averaged 27.0 points per game. His future with the team is anything but stable, even with the team controlling his contract situation for the near future. Disagreements on his injury will only fuel his desire to demand a trade.
