Peru and Chile begin their 2024 Copa America campaigns with an important game to get a headstart on second in the group behind Argentina. They have to worry about Canada becoming a Cinderella team, but the betting odds say that Chile and Peru have a better chance of advancing than Canada. A win in this game could put the victors in the knockout stage if they both beat Canada and lose to Argentina. It is time to continue our Copa America odds series with a Peru-Chile prediction, pick, and how-to-watch.

Peru won the first tournament called Copa America in 1975 but has been to just one final since then, in 2019. Chile’s current manager, Gareca, led Peru to back-to-back Copa America semi-finals before being let go after a failed attempt to qualify for the Qatar World Cup. Peru put their trust in Jorge Fossati, who has led them to four losses in six qualifying matches. Peru has just one goal over those six matches.

Chile’s 2010s were filled with Copa America success, as they won back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016. That was the end of Chile’s success, as they only finished as high as fourth in the next two Copa Americas and didn’t qualify for two consecutive World Cups. Chile could also miss the 2026 World Cup, as they are currently 1-2-3 and sitting eighth in the CONMEBOL table. The top six teams in the table qualify, while the seventh move on to an Intercontinental playoffs.

Why Peru Will Win

Chile’s offense hasn’t been much better than Peru’s, even though Peru will get all the criticism heading into this game. Chile had two goals in a 2-0 victory over Peru in October, but they haven’t scored a goal in the following three games. Chile has three goals total over the six qualifying games. This match will be low on scoring, and Peru needs to outlast Chile long enough to score one.

Why Chile Will Win

Peru will struggle to score at the Copa America if they continue to rely on 40-year-old Paolo Guerrero to shoulder the scoring load. Peru has been struggling to score in qualifying, with just one goal in six matches, and they may be in trouble in this game against their old manager. Peru’s offense strategy isn’t a mystery, but their old manager should have a few tricks up his sleeve.

Chile’s offense has been as poor as Peru’s, but their 2-0 victory in October showed they are still the better team.

Final Peru-Chile Prediction & Pick

The under could be a good bet in this game, but the juice is too high. Chile scored two goals on Peru in October despite their offensive issues, and the worry is that Peru could start chasing the game and let Chile score more than two goals. Chile dominated in October, outpossessing them by over 20% and outchancing 13-4. The only saving grace for Peru is that the game was in front of 37,000 rabid fans in Chile. Could Peru close the gap on a neutral field in Texas?
