In PGA Championship news, Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia didn’t exactly have the greatest few holes Thursday and Friday, falling short of weekend qualification.

Fanatics will not care, but casual fans who are only turning on the PGA Championship for big names likely will.

PGA Championship Cuts

The original 156 player field is down to just 79 heading into the weekend. Notable players to join Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia as PGA Championship cuts are Jim Furyk, Marc Leishman and Henrik Stenson.

Rickie Fowler missed the cut in extra wild and unfortunate fashion. Hindsight allows us to pick from any single moment as ‘the reason’ a golfer might have failed, but Fowler’s missing of a six-inch putt — then missing the cut by only one stroke — sure feels like the moment that got him.

Sergio Garcia, who is simply good for business when he gets going, didn’t have any such ‘what if’ moments on the course. Sometimes players his caliber just have a few bad holes. It happens.

The good news for the event is that plenty of names remain in the hunt heading into the weekend. Losing two superstars is never ideal, but it’s the name of the game. Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson, among a host of others, are still playing this weekend.

Nevertheless, the loss of Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia is still going to leave some fans sad as they continue to watch what has otherwise been a rather exciting PGA Championship.
