The Philadelphia Phillies fired manager Joe Girardi on Friday amid their disappointing start to the 2022 season. There had been speculation for a couple of weeks that Girardi was on the hot seat in Philadelphia.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski revealed the final decision process when it came to firing Joe Girardi:

“I did not consult with one player, I did not consult with one coaching staff member,” Dombrowski said. “I talked to some [front office people]… I did talk to John Middleton more about what my thought process was and what I was thinking about and he said it was my decision.”

This was seemingly the decision of Dave Dombrowski. So what should Phillies fans know about Dombrowski? Is he someone who can guide the Phillies back into contention?

He has worked in MLB since 1978. He rose up the ranks and took over as the Montreal Expos (now Washington Nationals) general manager at just 31 years old in 1988. He has since worked with the Tigers, Marlins, and Red Sox. He helped Boston build a World Series-winning team in 2018.

Dombrowski joined the Phillies in 2021 and clearly has a plan of attack. However, he wanted a new leader to captain the ship on the field. It will be interesting to see if interim manager Rob Thomson stays on as a full-time replacement or if Philadelphia opts to go in a different direction down the road.

Regardless of what happens, Dave Dombrowski is someone Phillies fans can trust to help the team become a contender once again.
