Detroit Pistons center Andre Drummond has withdrawn from USA Basketball's upcoming training camp in Las Vegas, the organization announced on Thursday. Drummond is one of 13 players who have thus far withdrawn from the activities this summer, along with rookie Zion Williamson, who withdrew consideration from Team USA's Select Team that is slated to scrimmage against the senior team in the upcoming days.
Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo has been called up in his place, likely to vie for one of the spots on the final 12-man roster for the FIBA World Cup.
Team USA members are expected to include:
Player | Position | NBA Team |
Bam Adebayo | Center | Miami Heat |
Harrison Barnes | Forward | Sacramento Kings |
Jaylen Brown | Forward | Boston Celtics |
Kyle Kuzma | Forward | Los Angeles Lakers |
Brook Lopez | Center | Milwaukee Bucks |
Kyle Lowry | Guard | Toronto Raptors |
Khris Middleton | Guard/Forward | Milwaukee Bucks |
Donovan Mitchell | Guard | Utah Jazz |
Mason Plumlee | Center | Denver Nuggets |
Julius Randle | Forward | New York Knicks |
Marcus Smart | Guard | Boston Celtics |
Jayson Tatum | Forward | Boston Celtics |
PJ Tucker | Forward | Houston Rockets |
Myles Turner | Center | Indiana Pacers |
Kemba Walker | Guard | Boston Celtics |
Thaddeus Young | Forward | Chicago Bulls |
Drummond's absence will likely thrust one among Myles Turner, Brook Lopez or Adebayo to start for head coach Gregg Popovich, with Mason Plumlee figuring as a likely cut or a potential bench piece as the only non-starter invited to participate.
Team USA's talent pool, however, takes yet another huge hit by taking another potential starter away from the competition in what now has been a comical array of players decommitting to the cause.
