The Prince of Persia The Sands of Time Remake is now being developed under the leadership of Ubisoft Montreal.

Originally announced during a Ubisoft Forward event in 2020, the Prince of Persia The Sands of Time Remake has been under development under wraps for a long while. This led to fans worrying about the game's state because fans worry about things they don't get updates about. The game was originally set to release in January 2021 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, under the Indian development studios of Ubisoft Mumbai and Ubisoft Pune. Now, Ubisoft Montreal will be taking over the development of the game until its eventual release during the 2022-2023 fiscal year.

“The development of Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time Remake will now be led by Ubisoft Montreal, the very birth place of the epic Sands of Time trilogy,” says the announcement. “This decision is an important step and the team, building upon the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, will now take the time they need to regroup on the scope of the game to deliver you the best experience for this remake of an all-time classic, when it's ready. We want to thank you all for your continuous support and patience throughout the development. Rest assured, that we will update you on the progress in a future update.”

The Sands of Time itself was a reboot of the Prince of Persia franchise, originally released for the PC, Xbox, PS2, and GameCube, with a handheld version being released for the GameBoy Advance. The 2003 action-adventure game was indeed developed by Ubisoft Montreal. Returning the development of the remake to Ubisoft Montreal might be a way to make sure that the game remains faithful to the game's original direction.

The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake was initially criticized by fans for its “lackluster look”, as well as the fact that the game was being developed using Ubisoft's proprietary engine Ubisoft Anvil. The game currently has no exact release date and no news on whether fans can expect the game to arrive on current-gen consoles as well.
