The Las Vegas Raiders finally got back to the postseason in 2021 after a five-year absence. Much of that had to do with the play of quarterback Derek Carr. Speaking Wednesday to NFL Network reporter Andrew Siciliano, all but confirmed that Carr will remain the Raiders' quarterback.

McDaniels had previously stated as much, just not quite as direct. This time, when asked whether he would definitely say Carr was his starting quarterback, McDaniels left little doubt.

“There is no doubt about it… I really am excited about this opportunity to work together. I know what he’s done and I know what we might be able to do going forward together.”

However, there is still the complication of his contract status. Carr has one year remaining on his five-year, $125 million contract. So, obviously this is the offseason where you typically choose to extend or create a new contract.

It's been reported that Carr is looking for somewhere in the range of $80 million for two years. That would make him one of the highest players in league history, per season.

As noted by The Athletic's Vic Tafur, Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler slowed the talk of a new contract a bit. The Raiders are looking to build off of the success from 2021. There are a number of key free agents that would be instrumental in keeping.

Not to mention, it's already been reported that the Raiders are likely picking up tailback Josh Jacobs' fifth year option at just over $10 million.

Nevertheless, Carr proved last season that he is a great leader, keeping Las Vegas together through tumultuous times.

“I am excited that we have a veteran leader on our football team that knows how to play the position and has won a lot of big games,” McDaniels said. “I am excited to see what we can do together.”
