The Oakland Raiders added a ton of offensive weapons to surround Derek Carr in 2019. Jon Gruden has some ideas when it comes to Carr in the Raiders offense in the upcoming season.

In 2019, Jon Gruden wants to get Derek Carr to scramble more in the offense. Carr also realizes that if he scrambles more, it could open more up for the Raiders offensively.

“I need to do it better. In the second year of a system, you can get through progressions faster,” Carr said. “In my head I can eliminate certain coverages and then get out and extend it whereas last year I was trying to do it so perfect. And we had too many sacks, and they weren’t all on the offensive line. That’s my fault. I take the blame.”

Carr is more athletic than people realize and Gruden noted that as well. Allowing the quarterback to feel comfortable tucking the ball down and running will be critical for Oakland in training camp. Carr will continue to work on his ability to make the decision to run in the coming weeks.

Of course, don't expect Carr to rush for over 500 yards like Cam Newton or Lamar Jackson. After all, in his five seasons in the NFL, Carr has just 413 yards rushing combined in those five seasons. Plus, he's never run it more than 39 times in any single season.

As everyone knows, the Raiders acquired Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams along with drafting Josh Jacobs to improve their offense. Adding the option of Carr to scramble more could add another wrinkle to the offense.
