Through the first few months of the NFL offseason, there has been a looming cloud over All-Pro defensive end Khalil Mack's contract situation with the Oakland Raiders. There hasn't been much significant progress in the last few weeks made toward a new extension being worked out between both sides.

This has led to Mack being notably absent from team organized workout through the early goings. According to Michael Gehlken of Las Vegas Review-Journal, the 27-year-old was once again a no-show at the first day of voluntary OTAs on Tuesday morning.

The lack of involvement from Mack has made it clear that he is seeking out a new lucrative extension to remain with the team for the long haul. He is entering the fifth-year option of his rookie contract worth $13.4 million for the 2018 campaign, which has him on pace to hit the free agent market next March.

Mack has undoubtedly put together a highly productive career up to this point that would warrant a massive payday on his next deal.  In his first four seasons in the NFL, he has established himself as one of the premier defensive players. He is coming off another strong campaign where he had a team-high 10.5 sacks, which made him the fifth player in team history to record at least 10 sacks in three different seasons. His 40.5 sacks through his first four years are the third-most by a player over that stretch in Raiders’ history and fifth-most all-time.

All of this would suggest that it would be a simple process for Mack to work out a new deal, but things have continued to persist in a similar manner to what is going on with reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald with the Los Angeles Rams. There have been reports that Mack is looking to garner at least $65 million in guaranteed money on the possible extension. This may just come down to it being a matter of time before it is worked out ahead of the 2018 season.
