Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr drew heavy criticism throughout the 2018 campaign, with some even questioning his future with the team heading into 2019.

However, Carr received a pretty big vote of confidence from general manager Mike Mayock on Thursday, with Mayock saying that the quarterback position is not a problem for the Raiders:

“When you look at 32 teams in this league, and there aren’t 32 starting quarterbacks, yet we have one of them,” Mayock said, according to Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “He’s a starting quarterback in the NFL. He can make every throw. We’ve got to do a better job of protecting him and giving him weapons. He played with two rookie tackles last year. We need to get more speed on offense. We need to be more dynamic. Derek Carr, at this point, is kind of the least of our problems.”

Carr threw for 4,049 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while completing 68.9 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 93.9 this season.

The 27-year-old signed a massive five-year, $125 million contract extension with Oakland in June 2017, making him the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history at the time.

His extension followed a 2016 campaign in which he finished with 3,937 yards, 28 touchdowns, and six picks while completing 63.8 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 96.7 before breaking his leg in Week 16, causing him to miss the Raiders' first and only playoff appearance since the 2002-03 season.

Carr, who Oakland took in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, made three straight Pro Bowls between 2015 and 2017.
