The Oakland Raiders have released veteran cornerback Sean Smith. This information came by way of Ian Rapoport on the mean streets of Twitter.

This is big news for the Raiders, as the franchise already released starting cornerback David Amerson just one day after Super Bowl 52.

Smith, who would have been owed $8.25 million next season, is headed to prison for a year due to in accordance with a plea deal due to legal issues relating to a July 4 arrest for assault and battery charges. Back in August, prosecutors alleged that Smith “beat and then stomped on the victim’s head near the corner of Arroyo Parkway and Colorado Boulevard early in the morning on July 4.”

A former second-round pick by the Miami Dolphins in the 2009 NFL Draft, Smith has had several issues with the law of the years. In 2014, he was charged with a DUI and he had the aforementioned issue in July.

With his release from Oakland, with the legal issues around him as baggage, it will be interesting to see if any teams are willing to take a chance on him. While once projected to be one of the better corners in the entire league, franchises might deem him not worthy of the risk at this point.

Smith, 30, has played for Miami, Kansas City and Oakland in his career.
