The Oakland Raiders are set to bring back former head coach Tom Cable to be the team’s offensive line coach under Jon Gruden.

Cable had spent the last seven years as the Seattle Seahawks’ offensive line coach and assistant head coach. He was recently fired along with offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell after a disappointing 9-7 season in Seattle.

Cable served as the Raiders’ offensive line coach in 2007 and became the interim head coach for 12 games in 2008 after Lane Kiffin was fired. He stayed on for two more seasons as head coach and had a 17-27 record in 44 games in charge before being fired after the 2010 season.

Cable faced a couple allegations of physical abuse during his time with the Raiders. He broke assistant coach Randy Hanson’s jaw during training camp in 2009, but he wasn’t charged with assault. Later that year, two women also alleged Cable had physically abused them, but he wasn’t punished by the league.

Seattle has consistently had among the least talented offensive lines in the league over the last few years. Nevertheless, Cable has been credited with orchestrating some very strong Seahawks rushing attacks. The best of those teams were led by running back Marshawn Lynch, who was at the peak of his powers.

Cable will now have significantly more talent to work with in Oakland, whose offensive line was considered one of the best in the league heading into this season. Cable could also be reunited with Lynch, who did not have as big of an impact as many had anticipated in his first season at Oakland. He finished with 891 yards and seven touchdowns.
