The honeymoon stage for the Oakland Raiders and Jon Gruden has long been over and just two weeks into the season, leaks of frustration and divide have hit the wire. According to Ian Rapoport of, things are coming to a head in Oakland due to the scouting system, among other things.

“But the manner in which he evaluates personnel — and the people who have his ear — has led to a disconnect in a Raiders building filled with people still trying to adjust to a new way of life,” Rapoport said.

Rapoport went on to say the following about the situation in Oakland.

“According to sources, Gruden essentially has his own staff that helps him judge talent and make decisions — most notably confident and Director of Football Research Dave Razzano — along with a slew of interns and assistants.”

If this is the case, it’s not hard to see why it could be frustrating to those outside of Gruden’s ‘personal staff.’ Gruden has always been known as a hard-nosed guy who has strong opinions that he sticks to. In the modern NFL, that may not jive well with other staff.

The Raiders have looked putrid through two games, starting off 0-2 while looking lost on defense the majority of the time. That has to make trading Khalil Mack even tougher for Raiders fans to get behind.

The trade of Mack to the Chicago Bears right before the season started seems to be what pushed things over the edge behind the scenes in Oakland. It’s been widely reported that there was a clear divide on that move and most outside of Gruden’s circle were livid.

The Raiders will look to turn it around as they travel to take on Miami in Week 3.
