Just over a month ago, Eric Weddle was participating in pickup games at the local LA Fitness. Now, the veteran safety is gearing up for a Super Bowl appearance with the Los Angeles Rams. Weddle came out of retirement to assist the Rams in their push for a championship, but it wasn't expected he'd be playing such a critical role within the secondary. Well, his responsibilities became even larger ahead of the Super Bowl 56 clash against the Bengals, as the team handed Weddle an important duty for the game. Per The AthleticWeddle will be calling the defensive plays for LA in the Super Bowl, having been given the green communication device used to relay plays from the sideline to the field.

This is a massive responsibility being placed upon Weddle, especially considering he's only been back in football for a handful of weeks. When the Super Bowl is over, Weddle plans to return to his life in retirement, but before that happens Sean McVay is entrusting him with the keys to his defense.

The 37-year-old has featured in three playoff games for the Rams, though he only started one of them. He recorded 13 tackles and one tackle for loss in his three appearances, though the veteran will be in the starting lineup and playing a pivotal role against the Bengals on Sunday.

Giving Weddle the communication beacon is a huge nod of trust from his head coach, as there are plenty of other quality defenders in the Rams' defensive unit. None boast the level of experience Weddle has however, making him an ideal candidate to communicate the defense's plays.
