The Wade Phillips era kicked off in the most amazing of fashions for the Los Angeles Rams – by crushing the Indianapolis Colts’ offense in a record-setting performance.

The Rams defeated Indianapolis by a wide margin, 46-9, with Jared Goff and Los Angeles’ offense feeding off of the energy of the team’s defense that recorded a pair of pick-sixes to go with a safety in their season-debut.

Underscoring the dominance of the Rams’ defense right from the first game of the season, it was noted by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk that it was the first time that a team pulled off that feat in a Week 1 contest.

Either way, the Rams became the first team in league history to rack up a pair of pick-sixes and a safety in a season opener. That’s a stat cultivated and circulated by the NFL.

Phillips was hired over the offseason as the team’s new defensive coordinator to help a shaky Rams’ defense that gave up 22.6 points per game last year, and if their win over Indianapolis was any indication, then Los Angeles might have sent chills down the spines of their future opponents. Phillip’s unit is even bound to get even better once defensive tackle Aaron Donald eventually suits up.
