The Los Angeles Rams face a challenge to retain cornerback Trumaine Johnson this offseason. Johnson will likely command a big long-term deal as one of, if not the best cornerback on the free-agent market. The Rams could have a tough decision whether to match any such offer, especially since they also have other key free agents in Lamarcus Joyner and Sammy Watkins to sign.

However, Rams head coach Sean McVay maintains that the team wants Johnson back next season and will do what it can to keep him.

“We want Trumaine back. We want to try to see if that can work,” McVay said according to Rams Insider Myles Simmons. “We do have a lot of respect and appreciation for probably the market that he’ll have. And I think that’s where, as you get a little closer to free agency, you see what does that market look like? That will then determine if we’re able to get him back and see him continue to play for us.”

Johnson has played his whole six-year NFL career for the Rams, who drafted him in the third round in 2012. He emerged as a key player in defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’ system last season as he recorded a team-high 14 pass breakups with two interceptions.

The Rams just traded for Marcus Peters, who could potentially fill Johnson's shoes as the team's No. 1 cornerback next season. But with his recent statement, it seems obvious that McVay would rather have Peters and Johnson playing side-by-side next season to form one of the more formidable cornerback duos in the entire league. Whether that can actually be a reality remains to be seen.
