Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay was mic’d up for the start of OTAs, and he seemed pretty pumped up to be back on the football field. McVay sounded particularly excited by new Rams receiver Brandin Cooks as he gushed multiple times to his assistants about Cooks’ “awesome” speed.

Cooks was one of the team’s many marquee arrivals during their busy offseason after they acquired him in a trade with the New England Patriots. He’s expected to take over the role previously held by Sammy Watkins last year, which is to provide a big-play threat for quarterback Jared Goff, as well as to become is top target overall.

McVay is certainly well aware of Cooks’ abilities, which go well beyond just his speed. The Rams previously tried to trade for him last offseason, but they were outbid by the Patriots. And upon acquiring him, McVay said Cooks “fits in any system” despite the Patriots’ apparent opinion that he wasn’t quite No. 1 receiver material.

Cooks had a solid lone season in New England as he had 65 catches for 1,082 yards and seven touchdowns. But he showed in his previous two seasons with New Orleans that he’s capable of a reaching an even higher level.

Perhaps his arrival in a creative, super-charged Rams offense led by McVay can unlock the same Cooks that starred with the Saints. If he does get up to speed quickly in LA, the Rams could very well be the legit Super Bowl contender that many people expect them to be this season.
