The Los Angeles Rams acquired running back Sony Michel from the New England Patriots on Wednesday. Apparently, Michel “had absolutely no idea” he was going to be dealt, according to Greg Beacham of The Associated Press.

This despite the fact that there had been a good amount of speculation around the NFL that Michel was going to be traded, in large part due to his contract situation and the Patriots' situation in the backfield. The running back is set to hit free agency after this season, so New England wanted to get some draft compensation back for him. They'll likely be getting a fourth-round pick when it's all said and done.

The Rams needed help at running back thanks to the devastating season-ending injury to starter Cam Akers, as well as some other injuries at the position. So, they decided to pay up to get Michel, who actually burned them in the Super Bowl as a member of the Patriots. The running back was the only player to score a touchdown in the 13-3 slugfest that was Super Bowl LII.

Michel got off to an excellent start in the NFL with the big rookie season that culminated in that Super Bowl victory,  and he was also rather productive in Year 2. Last season, however, was marred by injuries, and he only appeared in nine games and rushed for 449 yards and a score.

The Rams are hoping Michel finds his prior form and helps replace Akers in the lineup. Los Angeles has Super Bowl dreams this season.
