The several key players on the Los Angeles Rams are set to hit free agency this offseason, a list which will include veteran cornerback Trumaine Johnson. And as Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports is reporting, the 28-year-old has likely played his last snap with the Rams.

Los Angeles had applied the franchise tag on Johnson in each of the last two offseasons after unsuccessfully working out a long-term deal in both instances. The two sides had previously voiced optimism about getting a new contract in place, but that ship appears to have long sailed.

The Rams don't have any interest in designating Johnson with the franchise tag for a third straight year as they may use it as a starting point to work out a long-term deal with wide receiver Sammy Watkins. Meanwhile, the former third-round pick of the 2012 NFL Draft is likely to ask for a lucrative contract that could be out of the price range that the front office is willing to pay to retain him.

The team also has other key players aside from Watkins such as safety Lamarcus Joyner that they want to keep for the long haul. Additionally, Los Angeles has a strong desire to hammer out a new extension with 2017 Defensive Player of the Year defensive tackle Aaron Donald. All of that could leave the team a bit strapped for financial flexibility to offer the type of lucrative deal Johnson is aiming to land.

That said, the Rams should likely make an internal push to keep him given his importance to their stability in the secondary. He has been arguably their top cornerback for much of his first six years in the league. His departure would leave a sizeable hole defensively that may hard to replace this offseason.
