The New York Rangers came away with a 4-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets in a shootout on Sunday, but the concerning news is that Ryan Lindgren is dealing with an upper-body injury after a hit to the head from Sean Kuraly, according to Vince Mercogliano of USA Today.

A major boarding penalty was initially called on Sean Kuraly for the hit on Lindgren, but it was reduced to a minor. Rangers coach Peter Laviolette made it clear that he was not a fan of the hit.

“There was something going on through the course of the game with both of those guys and his elbow clearly took him in the head,” Laviolette said, via Mercogliano.

The Rangers are already dealing with injuries to key players in Adam Fox, Igor Shesterkin and Filip Chytil. Adding Lindgren to the list would be tough, and in past years, the Rangers have fallen apart defensively with him out of the lineup.

It will be worth monitoring updates this week regarding Lindgren, as the Rangers do not play again until Saturday against the New Jersey Devils.

There were positives for the Rangers in the win over the Blue Jackets. None bigger than Alexis Lafreniere, who is having a strong start to the season. Lafreniere scored two goals, and the second one tied the game to force overtime with 11 seconds left.

Lafreniere then scored the only goal in the shootout, as Jonathan Quick saved all of the shots he faced to secure the win.

Hopefully Lindgren's injury is not serious, and he will not have to miss much time. In the meantime, the Rangers will look to build on their lead atop the Metropolitan Division.
