Texas Rangers slugging outfielder Joey Gallo will undergo surgery to repair a broken hamate bone, according to Levi Weaver of The Athletic:

Gallo appeared to aggravate his wrist in last night's game against the Seattle Mariners, and an MRI revealed structural damage to the hamate bone.

The timetable could be anywhere from four to six weeks. Oakland Athletics first baseman Matt Olson suffered the same injury in just the second game of the season, and he missed all of April before returning to Oakland's lineup in May.

This has to be as frustrating as it is disappointing for Gallo. He had proven just how capable he was of hitting home runs after topping the 40-homer plateau in both 2017 and 2018, but he was making strides as a more well-rounded hitter this season.

Before heading to the Injured List, Gallo was slashing .253/.389/.598 with 22 homers, a 147 wRC+, and a .401 wOBA, which ranks seventh among all players with at least 250 at-bats, according to FanGraphs.

Gallo was also continuing to make strides as a defensive outfielder, playing in both center and left for Texas while posting four Defensive Runs Saved and an Ultimate Zone Rating of 5.5, both among his career bests.

Despite his improvements, the injuries have hit harder for Gallo this season. He missed three weeks in June with a left oblique strain, and he now figures to miss up to a month of action.

The Rangers had been falling farther and farther out of the playoff picture, but it is a shame that Gallo keeps experiencing setbacks in the midst of a career year.
