Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet had himself quite a game on Tuesday against the Orlando Magic, erupting for 54 points in 37 minutes of play. After the contest, he confessed that he got some extra motivation from former teammate and now San Antonio Spurs guard DeMar DeRozan.

VanVleet's performance was pretty remarkable, as he did it with ridiculous efficiency. He finished with a 73.9 percent shooting clip from the field and 78.6 percent clip from the outside. He also managed to hit all nine of his free throws, all while being active on the defensive end for the Raptors with three steals and three blocks. Toronto beat Orlando, 123-108.

In his postgame interview, per Tim Bontemps of ESPN, VanVleet admitted that he was thinking of DeRozan while chasing his franchise scoring record. Apparently, the Spurs guard has consistently called him  “weak” whenever he has a big game but fails to break the record

DeRozan's Raptors scoring record was 52 points, which he delivered against the Milwaukee Bucks on January 1, 2018.

For what it's worth, Fred VanVleet's scoring explosion was also the most points scored by an undrafted player. He surpassed the 53 points set by the legendary Moses Malone in 1982. If FVV sustains his solid play throughout his career, he will join the likes of Ben Wallace and John Starks as some of the best undrafted players ever.

Toronto is off to a shaky start this season, as they have won nine games and lost 12. VanVleet, however, has been one of their bright spots–averaging of 18.8 points, 4.4 boards, 6.5 dimes and 1.7 steals entering Tuesday's game.

The undrafted Raptors guard is definitely one of the best examples of betting on one's self and succeeding.
