Mesut Ozil's career path has been rife with success at nearly every corner. The German midfielder first had his breakout with the Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. Afterwards, he carved a name for himself in Arsenal as one of the best players at his position. He's one of the most decorated players of his generation.

As his playing days on the pitch come to a close, the ex-Real Madrid star seems to have the next stage of his career planned out already. According to Mesut Ozil's agent, the midfielder is looking to move into the esports scene once he eventually retires. Ozil is targeting the popular battle royale Fortnite as his game of choice. “He will go more into esports, play himself and maybe become an esports athlete. He’s really good, to be honest, at Fortnite and I think one day I wouldn’t be surprised if he is competing. He owns a team – M10 Esports – and he has players. He has a gaming house in Germany. He has football, like Fifa, and Fortnite.”

Ozil is currently signed under German Tier 1 club Fenerbache. However, the ex-Real Madrid star is currently not with the team after a verbal altercation with his coach. Considering his age, it seems likely that Ozil won't be returning to the pitch in the future.

The esports scene has come a long way from its inception. In fact, many popular sports figures have tried their hand at gaming, with stars like Neymar Jr. mingling with Brazilian CS:GO stars. However, Ozil's plans to go professional in an esport has a few major roadblocks: in particular his age. The ex-Real Madrid star is already 33, which is considered “old” in most esports titles.
