The true spirit of The Basketball Tournament came to fruition today when the Denver Nuggets signed a player from the team that won the championship of that tournament, Overseas Elite.

The Nuggets agreed to a partially guaranteed three-year deal with D.J. Kennedy, who led Overseas Elite to the $2 million prize of The Basketball Tournament just a few weeks ago.

Kennedy took home $175,000 for winning the tournament and now stands to make a lot more if it works out for him in the NBA. He's only appeared in two NBA games in his career during the 2011-12 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. In 93 games in the D-League, Kennedy averaged 16.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists.

The 6-foot-6 left-handed small forward graduated from St. John's but went undrafted. He's spent most of his career in the D-League and overseas.

The Nuggets already have 15 players with guaranteed salaries so it's still a long shot for Kennedy to make the final roster. He'll need a strong showing in preseason to get a chance in Denver, or perhaps draw some interest from other teams.

There's no question that Kennedy's play in The Basketball Tournament helped him catch the eye of the Nuggets. This was the second year of The Basketball Tournament. There's a good chance we'll be hearing more and more stories of players performing well in it getting a chance at the NBA in the years to come.
