The Boston Red Sox are currently in the midst of an abysmal season, sitting at the bottom of the American League East with a 10-16 record. As they hope to turn around their campaign, the Red Sox have called up former top prospect Jarren Duran, who will bat leadoff on Friday night and start in center field.
The #RedSox today announced the following roster moves:
– Placed LHP Rich Hill and INF/OF Kiké Hernández on the COVID-19 Related Injured List.
– Recalled OF Jarren Duran from Triple-A Worcester.
– Selected RHP John Schreiber to the active major league roster from Worcester.— Red Sox (@RedSox) May 6, 2022
Duran had a cup of coffee in the big leagues last season but struggled to produce. He hit just .215 in 33 games and was ultimately sent back down to Triple-A. However, Duran is absolutely raking this year for Worchester, slashing .397 in 15 games.
The Red Sox offense is struggling to produce in 2021, ranking 24th in the MLB in runs scored. The outfield, in particular, has been awful, with the likes of Kike Hernandez, Alex Verdugo, and Jackie Bradley Jr looking non-existent at the plate.
Hopefully, Duran can add a bit of a spark to Boston’s lineup. They certainly need it right now after getting shut out by Shohei Ohtani on Thursday. Also, the future of Xander Bogaerts is very much in the air. Contract negotiations broke down between his party and Boston, essentially opening the door to a possible exit in free agency.
The Red Sox begin a three-game set with the Chicago White Sox on Friday.
